Althea McNish is a British-Trinidadian textile designer who has designed for Liberty and Hull Traders. Starting out in the 1950s her painterly style and sketch-like mark making stems from her artistic background as she initially trained as a painter.
Her colour palette is bright using strong hues with bright contrasting highlight colours (pink with yellow, emerald green with teale blue, royal blue with bright red, fuchsia and purple), and black mark making. These designs worked particularly well with screen printing which by the 1950s was being widely used in textile printing.
Working with her husband, John Weiss, Althea still exhibits her work world wide and makes one off textile art pieces.
