Rupert Newman trained as a printed textile designer but now works with light, projecting images and affects, predominantly onto buildings. These projections, complete with music, are used at events and festivals to create an atmosphere and spectacle.

Many of his projections have the feel of a textile design, repeated motif, familiar patterns and traditional themes. He used this technique at his degree show where he changed the look of a number of wallhangings by projecting lights upon them.

His textile designs are incredible. They could only have been made digitally. There is no apparent repeat, they burst with colour, particularly neons and luminescent colours, and feature exploded geometry which draw the eye in. The translation from these designs to light projections is easy to see and I expect he makes far more money projecting his designs that he would selling them as textiles. Mores the pity.
