Humphrey Spender was a painter, photographer and textile designer. He began working as a photographer during the Interwar years documenting British life as part of the Mass Observation project and became an official war photographer during the Second World War. He turned to painting and textile design in the 1950s and his the colour palettes he used in his paintings were very different to the more vibrant ones he used for his textiles. Designing for Heals and Edinburgh Weavers his prints were bright and utilised the new screen printing technology.
