Jessica Stockholder is an installation artist. She creates large scale colourful works that occupy and transform space. She talks about her love for colour and it strongly features in her works, to define and transform materials, lead the eye, and confuse it, and tie her installation pieces together. Her work is boundryless, exploding like it can’t be contained but has strong references to the vocabulary of painting. Her recent space interventions have come out of the gallery walls and occupy physical cityscapes, colouring in pavements, public spaces and road networks.
Her colour choices are of course bold but she frequently layers tones to create depth through illusion as well as physically. Stockholder understands the way that colour draws the eye and uses it to challenge the viewers experience. There are some wonderful videos of her making and talking about her work here and her own website is very generous with its insight into her practice.
